It’s been a year since the shooting of gay teen Lawrence King by his classmate Brandon McInerney captured nationwide attention, and a vigil is being held in King’s memory:
“The event takes place 6 p.m. on Feb. 12 at 856 E. Thompson Blvd. in Ventura, and proceeds to the Ventura pier. According to an announcement, guest speakers are encouraged to share stories, conversation, experiences and memories. It’s being sponsored in part by the Ventura County Rainbow Alliance.
King’s death has been believed to be a hate crime against the youth because of his homosexuality. Court proceedings have been ongoing against Brandon McInerney, who is accused of the Feb. 12, 2008 shooting.”
March 17 is the date set for a preliminary hearing for McInerney after one was recently postponed:
“A preliminary hearing for a 15-year-old murder suspect was postponed … to give his lawyers time to appeal a judge’s rejection last month of a request for documents showing how prosecutors decide when juvenile offenders will be tried in adult court. McInerney, who turned 15 on Saturday, is being tried as an adult for the Feb. 12 killing of 15-year-old Larry King, a classmate at E.O. Green School in Oxnard. McInerney’s lawyers, Scott Wippert of United Defense Group of Studio City and Robyn Bramson of North Hollywood, said today that they want an appeals court to reverse last month’s ruling by Superior Court Judge Rebecca Riley. Bramson said she plans to file the appeal (this) week.”
