Donald Trump broke a lengthy Twitter silence on Thursday morning to respond to last night’s appointment by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein of a special counsel in the Russia investigation.
Tweeted Trump: “With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special councel (sic) appointed!…This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!”

Yes, “councel” was misspelled.
UPDATE. Trump deleted the original tweet, and tweeted again with the word “counsel” spelled correctly.

The Justice Department’s appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller has been widely praised by both Republicans and Democrats.
The White House issued a statement on behalf of Trump last night. It read:
“As I have stated many times, a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know — there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity. I look forward to this matter concluding quickly. In the meantime, I will never stop fighting for the people and the issues that matter most to the future of our country.”
