Chicago Blackhawk Andrew Shaw used an anti-gay slur at a referee from the penalty box. The moment was broadcast during last night’s game against the St. Louis Blues.

Andrew Shaw, 24-year-old center for the Chicago Blackhawks, caught a penalty for interference in the final minutes of a contentious match against the St. Louis Blues, as Deadspin noted. And, perhaps because the Blackhawks were down 2-1 in the series, Shaw was not happy about it. On his way to the penalty box, he flipped an official two middle fingers and, though there was no audio from the ice, appeared to shout “F—k you!”

Once in the penalty box, Shaw doubled down. Again, there was no sound, but Shaw, after banging on the glass with his stick, appears to have shouted “F—k you, you f—king faggot” at an official.

Shaw also yelled something very similar at officials as he was called for the penalty:

YouCanPlay Project, of course, has worked closely with the NHL to provide a more welcoming environment for LGBT people. The league has never had an openly gay player.

Shaw claims he doesn’t know what he said: “Emotions were high. I don’t know what I said. I wasn’t happy with the call.”
