OUT Magazine has been named one of the 30 hottest magazine launches of the past 30 years and will be honored by  min (Media Industry News) at a special event on April 14.

This is particularly exciting for us here because the magazine was started by Michael Goff (my partner here at Towleroad) and the late Sarah Pettit.

Goff notes the massive amount of people that helped launch the pioneering magazine who are still doing great things today, in a Facebook post:

Thanks, Roger Black for posting, as well a for rounding Out that launch team along with Mary Connelly, James Conrad, Bruce Steele, PublishingExperts Janet, Ross Bleckner, Sean Ray,Ellen Marin, Eva Leonard, Will Guilliams-Gatewood, Jennifer Sharpe ,Ezra Alvarez, Kent Lau, Tom Beer, Elise Harris, Alexander Chee, Jeffrey A. Roeske, and the must-not-yet-impossible-to-forget Harry Taylor –without many of whose individual contributions we might not have an Out magazine.

…plus early help/support/advice from Richard Pandiscio, Terry McDonell, Tucker Shaw, Bob Colacello,Ingrid Sichy; a mighty-fine Editorial Advisory Board that started with  Scott Baldinger, Susie Bright, Sally Chew,Bill Coleman, Eric Gutierrez, Anne-christine d’Adesky, Anneliese Estrada, Howard Karren, Jennie Livingston, Kiki Mason, John Mather, Adam Moss, Mitch Owens, Mayer Rus, Judith Shulevitz, Michelangelo Signorile, Liz Tracey, Linda Villarosa, James D Woods, Helen Zia; early contributors including Jonathan Adler, Brantley Bardin, Beth Coleman, William Middleton, Isaac Mizrahi, Brooks Peters, B. Ruby Rich, David Rimanelli, Linda Simpson, Karl Soehnlein, William Stevenson, James White, Victor Zonana; plus Frank DeCaro and everyone else on that train car to Washington DC for the 1993 March on Washington. Who did i forget? Please add in comments. The mind grows weary, but proud.

With congrats and thanks to Aaron Hicklin and everyone else who has continued to innovate on and perpetuate what we set in motion.

The criteria for the titles:

1. The magazine must have been continuously published since its inceptionScreen Shot 2016-03-06 at 6.00.57 PM
2. The magazine must have been in business since at least 2012
3. The magazine must have either broken new ground or entered a very competitive market and thrived in it
4. The magazine must have transferred from a magazine to a brand
5. The magazine must have extended its reach beyond the ink and paper and/or created other entities based on its DNA
6. The magazine crossed the borders of the United States and created international editions worldwide
7. The magazine today is a force to contend with in its specific category of publishing

Achieving five of the seven mentioned criteria assured the magazine a spot on the list of the hottest magazines of the last 30 years.

Check out the rest of the publications that made the cut here.

Congrats to all!
