Beyonce surprised the internet on Saturday when she dropped a music video for a new song, “Formation (Dirty).”
The release comes just one day before she’s set to appear during the Super Bowl 50 halftime show alongside Coldplay and Bruno Mars.
Beyonce’s biggest surprise to date was the release of her self-titled video album in 2013 that virtually no one saw coming. The release of “Formation” caught fans and music followers equally off guard.
The video announces her return to the music scene with the opening declaration, “B*tch, I’m back.” Later she proclaims, “I take what’s mine / I’m a star.”
Lush and wide-ranging in visual style, “Formation (Dirty)” sets its scene in the American south (Louisiana to be specific), with images that call to mind racial injustice, police brutality, voodoo, post-Katrina New Orleans, and old-world glamour.
