Ireland Marriage Equality Referendum Round-Up

Iona Institute mouthpiece Breda O'Brien has been quiet for a few weeks. A consistent whinger that the No campaign is being "silenced", Breda once again missed out on the irony of it all by taking to her column in the Irish Times on Saturday to argue that the "thought police" are forcing the poor old bigots to vote Yes at gunpoint.

Breda is also appalled at the notion that the Irish National Teachers Organisation's LGBT group intends "to normalise same-sex marriage in the teaching of children as young as four."

Despite what you read in her spiteful column, please do not call Brena a homophobe. She will cry and is likely to sue you.

The Sunday Independent reports that the Yes vote is in "freefall" having dropped 13 percent over the last month to 53 percent.

An Irish Times survey finds that the yes vote is 73 percent.

Speaking with Hot Press, U2 have announced their support for marriage equality, along with 77 artists and musicians including Sinead O'Connor, Bob Geldof, Neil Jordan and Glen Hansard.

Mass goers at the Pro Cathedral in Dublin have mixed views about marriage equality.

Marie Ó Faoláin will be voting No “for the sake of the family and the children…I have lovely gay friends, really nice people. They have civil partnership. I really think [it takes] a man and woman to found a family. I mean that’s what it’s all about. The State, at least our Constitution, has promised to protect the family…"

Thomas Curtis is voting No “because I think it’s against everything. Say there’s two men and they get a baby, who’s going to breast feed it? There’s loads of things. I’ve given it a lot of thought.”

Declan O’Neill is voting Yes because “it’s time for a bit of a change, I think, and I have friends who are gay and all that sort of thing. It’s, in a sense, a support to them.”

The Journal reports that the majority of TDs and Senators intend to vote Yes. Every member of Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann was contacted. Of the 172 who responded, 162 intend to vote Yes, six plan on voting No, and one is unsure.

Anti-gay Senator Rónán Mullen insists, however that a majority of Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil TDs, half of Sinn Féin TDs and “at least 40% of Labour TDs” will vote No and "nobody will ever know." Those would be Breda O'Brien's persecuted, silenced bigots.
