“More gay couples were married in California in the first three months that same-sex marriages were legal than were married in the first four years it was legal in Massachusetts, according to a new study. The data, released Monday by UCLA’s Williams Institute, found that an estimated 11,000 same-sex couples were married in California from June 17, when the California Supreme Court began allowing the weddings, to Sept. 17. As of spring, 10,385 same-sex couples had wed in Massachusetts since the state legalized such unions in May 2004, according to a study by the institute released in July.”

The L.A. Times adds: “In a report filed with the secretary of state’s office, the No-on-8 campaign disclosed it had raised $15.75 million by the end of last month, including $1.36 million from donors giving less than $1,000. The no-campaign has spent $14.7 million this year, including $10.4 million on television advertising. Among the major donors to No-on-8 were several wealthy gay rights advocates; in addition, the Service Employees International Union has given $500,000 and the California Teachers Assn. $250,000. The Yes-on-8 campaign had not filed its disclosure by late Monday.”

Those on both sides of the issue are treading lightly to court independent voters, the SF Chronicle reported yesterday: “The question of same-sex marriage splits Californians, forcing both campaigns to tiptoe through a political minefield in an attempt to avoid angering the swing voters each side needs to win Nov. 4.”
