Richard Rogers Jr., found guilty last November of killing Thomas Mulcahy, 57, and Anthony Marrero, 44, after picking them up at a gay bar, stabbing them, dismembering them, and leaving their body parts in plastic bags along New Jersey highways, has been sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison. “Tracey Mulcahy, who lives in Boston, noted that during the course of the trial details of her father’s alcoholism and homosexuality emerged, which she called ‘aspects of his life that he tried desperately to keep separate from his family.’ She added, ‘But more than anything he was a loving father.'”

The judge spoke sternly to Rogers before sending him away: “You are an evil human being. It is difficult, even in today’s world where there is war and there is death and destruction, to imagine what takes place in the mind of a human being that would cause them to do what you did to these two human beings. I will do everything within my power to make sure that you never walk free again,” he said, “that you die in some hole in some prison without ever having freedom again.”

A 20-year-old homeless man has been charged with the strangling death of a gay student at the University of Texas Arlington last October. Evidence suggests that the victim, Samuel Lea, had allowed his attacker, Kyle Nathan Johnson, to stay with him for a period of time. Their relationship went sour in an apparent dispute over food. Johnson is being held on $250,000 bail.
